Planning your wedding can be one of the most exciting, yet overwhelming, experiences of your life. As a wedding planner (or simply someone who's been through it), there are a few things I wish I had known before diving into my own wedding planning process. Here are some insights that might help you as you navigate your own journey to "I do."
You Can’t Please Everyone
One of the biggest lessons I learned was that no matter how hard you try, not everyone will be happy with every decision. Whether it’s the guest list, the food choices, or the colour scheme, someone will have an opinion. The key is to stay true to yourself and your partner. Your wedding is about the two of you, so focus on what feels right for your relationship, not on pleasing everyone around you.
Time Flies Faster Than You Think
Everyone says this, but it’s so true! The day goes by in a blink, and it can be hard to absorb everything happening around you. I wish I had taken more time to pause and enjoy the moment—especially in the hours before the ceremony. Make sure to savor the special moments with your partner, family, and friends. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime celebration, and those memories will stay with you forever.
It’s Okay to Ask for Help
I was determined to handle everything myself, but it was a mistake. Wedding planning can be a lot, and it’s okay to ask for help from trusted family members, friends, or even a professional planner. Letting go of the reins for a little while makes the process more enjoyable and less stressful.
Small Details Matter
When you’re focused on the big picture, it’s easy to overlook small details, but those are the moments guests will remember most. Whether it’s a personal touch in the décor or a special surprise for your partner, little things often have the biggest impact.
Don’t Forget to Eat
In the rush of getting ready and taking photos, I barely ate anything before the ceremony. Trust me, you’ll need energy! Plan for a light snack or a proper breakfast to keep your energy up. Assign someone to be in charge or making sure you eat and drink.
Don’t Stress the Small Stuff
At the end of the day, things won’t always go according to plan, and that’s okay. The things that seem like big issues in the moment—like a late vendor or a forgotten item—will seem small in hindsight. Focus on the love and joy of the day, and let the little hiccups roll off your back.
Wedding planning is a journey, and it’s full of learning moments. Embrace the experience and remember that your wedding is ultimately about celebrating the love between you and your partner. With a little patience and flexibility, you’ll create a beautiful day that you and your loved ones will cherish forever.
